Enderman: Origin and Behavior Lore
Why do Endermen teleport? Why do they hate being looked at? And what is their connection to the ancient builders who may have become them?
This page is about where Endermen came from: their tie to the End, the ancient builders, and what their speech and their habits suggest about a past the game never states. For a quirk by quirk account of how they actually behave in game, read Enderman Behavior: A Detailed Analysis.

Endermen are among Minecraft's most iconic mobs. Tall, black, purple-eyed figures that teleport, carry blocks, and attack if you look at them. They appear in all three dimensions but call the End home. Their behavior is strange, their design is unsettling, and their lore may hold the key to Minecraft's deepest mystery: what happened to the people who came before?
Physical Characteristics
Endermen are three blocks tall, making them one of the tallest mobs in the game. They have long, thin limbs and emit purple particles identical to those produced by Ender Pearls and the End Portal. Their eyes glow purple. They make distorted sounds that, when reversed and pitch-shifted, sound like human speech saying phrases like "hi," "hello," and "what's up."
That last detail is critical. Endermen speak. The audio is processed to sound alien, but the underlying sounds are human vocalizations. This has been confirmed by the Minecraft sound designer. Endermen are not silent monsters. They are communicating in a language that was once ours.
The Staring Mechanic
Endermen become hostile when the player's crosshair rests on their face. This is not proximity-based aggression. It is eye contact. The Enderman freezes, opens its jaw, and shakes before attacking. This reaction is closer to a panic response than a predatory one. The Enderman does not want to be seen. Being observed causes it distress.
Why would a creature fear being looked at? One theory is shame. If Endermen were once human (or human-like), their current form may be a corruption they are aware of. Being seen reminds them of what they were. Another theory is that eye contact triggers a territorial or defensive instinct, that the gaze is perceived as a threat display.
Block-Moving Behavior
Endermen pick up and place blocks seemingly at random. They carry grass blocks, flowers, pumpkins, and other natural blocks, moving them from one location to another with no apparent purpose. But is it truly random? Some players have observed Endermen moving blocks in patterns, as if trying to build or arrange something. The behavior may be a remnant of a former intelligence, a creature that once built civilizations now reduced to mindlessly rearranging single blocks.
The Three-Dimension Presence
Endermen spawn in all three dimensions: the Overworld, the Nether, and the End. No other mob does this. Zombies, skeletons, and spiders are Overworld creatures. Piglins and ghasts are Nether creatures. Shulkers are End creatures. But Endermen exist everywhere, as if they once had access to all dimensions and still wander between them.
In the End, Endermen spawn in massive numbers. They populate both the central island and the outer End islands. This is their home dimension, but their presence in the Overworld and Nether suggests they are travelers, beings that move between worlds as naturally as walking between rooms.
The Ancient Builder Connection
The most widely held fan theory about Endermen is that they are the transformed remains of the Ancient Builders. This theory, detailed on its own page, proposes that a lost civilization traveled to the End and was changed by it. Their tall, thin forms could be bodies stretched and warped by exposure to the End's energy. Their teleportation could be a corrupted form of the portal technology they once mastered. Their distorted speech could be the last echoes of a language they once spoke fluently.
Mojang has never confirmed or denied this theory. But they have leaned into it. The addition of more End lore, more human-like structures, and more connections between dimensions all strengthen the case that the Endermen were once something else.
