Pillagers and Illagers: A Fallen Civilization

The Illager faction -- Pillagers, Evokers, Vindicators, and Ravagers -- and what their structures tell us about a society that split from the Villagers.

Villagers live in peaceful communities, trading goods and farming crops. Illagers raid those communities, armed with crossbows, axes, and dark magic. They look alike. They sound alike. They share the same basic body shape and oversized nose. The connection is undeniable: Illagers and Villagers are the same species. Something split them apart.

The Illager Types

The Illager faction consists of several specialized variants. Pillagers carry crossbows and patrol in groups. Vindicators wield iron axes and are found in Woodland Mansions. Evokers summon fangs from the ground and deploy flying Vexes. Illusioners (Java Edition only, unused in natural spawning) create duplicates of themselves. Witches, while not technically Illagers, often ally with them during raids.

The specialization is key. This is not a random group of monsters. It is an organized military force with ranged units, melee fighters, magic users, and support. They have structure, hierarchy, and strategy.

Woodland Mansions

Woodland Mansions are the Illager headquarters, massive structures that generate in Dark Oak forests far from spawn. They contain dozens of rooms, some functional (dining halls, libraries, bedrooms) and some mysterious (obsidian rooms, trophy rooms with wool statues, prison cells). Evokers and Vindicators patrol the halls.

The mansions tell a story of wealth and power. These are not caves or camps. They are estates. The Illagers who live here have resources, architecture, and taste. The wool statues in some rooms depict various mobs, suggesting the Illagers study or collect creatures. The obsidian rooms hint at experiments with Nether materials.

The Split

Why did the Illagers separate from the Villagers? The game does not say directly, but the evidence points toward a disagreement about magic. Villagers have no magic users. Their culture is based on farming, trading, and iron golem protection. Illagers, meanwhile, have Evokers who wield powerful dark magic, summoning Vexes (ghost-like creatures) and attacking with ground fangs.

The theory is straightforward: a group of Villagers pursued forbidden magic, were exiled (or chose to leave), and built their own society far away. Over time, they militarized. The peaceful farmers became raiders, returning to attack the villages they once called home.

Raids

Raids are triggered when a player with the Bad Omen effect enters a village. This status is gained by killing a Pillager captain. The raid sends waves of Illagers, including Ravagers (massive beast-like mounts), to attack the village. If the village's Iron Golems and the player cannot defeat them, the village is overrun.

Raids are not random violence. They are organized military campaigns with escalating waves and strategic unit composition. The Illagers are not mindless. They plan. They coordinate. And they target villages specifically, not random locations in the world.

The Ravager

Ravagers are massive beasts that Illagers ride into battle. They have 100 hearts of health and deal heavy knockback. They are among the most dangerous mobs in raids. But what are they? They do not resemble any other mob in Minecraft. They are not natural creatures. Some players theorize they are bred or created by the Illagers, purpose-built war animals.

Totems of Undying

Evokers drop Totems of Undying on death, items that prevent the holder from dying once. The existence of these totems means the Evokers have mastered death-prevention magic. This is extraordinary. No other culture in Minecraft has anything like it. The Illagers have not just studied forbidden magic. They have achieved something the Villagers never could.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Illagers and Villagers related?

Yes. They share the same body model and physical features. Illagers are widely understood to be a faction that split from Villager society.

Can you befriend Illagers?

No. Illagers are always hostile to both players and Villagers. There is no mechanic for peaceful interaction.

What is the Bad Omen effect?

Bad Omen is a status effect gained by killing a Pillager captain (identifiable by the banner on its back). Entering a village with this effect triggers a raid.

Where do Woodland Mansions generate?

Woodland Mansions generate in Dark Oak Forest biomes, typically thousands of blocks from spawn. Cartographer Villagers can sell maps that lead to them.
