The Nether: A Fallen Civilization

Before the 1.16 Nether Update, the Nether was a monotonous hellscape: netherrack, lava, Ghasts, and Zombie Pigmen. It served as a fast-travel shortcut and a source of Blaze Rods and Nether Wart. The update transformed it into a dimension with five distinct biomes, two new mob civilizations, and structures that tell the story of a world that was once alive.

The Five Biomes

The Nether now contains the Nether Wastes (the original biome), Crimson Forest, Warped Forest, Soul Sand Valley, and Basalt Deltas. Each biome has its own terrain, flora, and fauna.

The Crimson Forest is a fungal biome where Piglins hunt Hoglins. Massive crimson fungi grow here, creating a canopy of red. The Warped Forest is its blue-green counterpart, eerily quiet and populated primarily by Endermen. The Soul Sand Valley is a barren wasteland of soul sand and soul soil, with blue soul fire and fossil remains embedded in the terrain. The Basalt Deltas are volcanic, with basalt columns and magma blocks forming a harsh, industrial landscape.

Nether Fortresses

Nether Fortresses are among the oldest structures in the game. They are built from nether brick, a material that requires smelting netherrack. The fortresses span across lava oceans on bridges and contain Blaze spawners, Wither Skeleton spawn zones, and loot chests. They are clearly constructed, not natural formations.

The fortresses show signs of age. They are partially destroyed in many places, with missing sections and crumbling walls. No living builder inhabits them. The Blazes and Wither Skeletons that spawn inside are more like security systems left running than inhabitants.

Bastion Remnants

Bastion Remnants are the Piglin structures described in detail on the Piglin civilization page. They represent a more recent construction than Nether Fortresses, using different materials (Blackstone, Gilded Blackstone) and serving different purposes (housing, livestock, treasure storage). The Piglins live in and around them but are not building new ones.

The coexistence of Nether Fortresses and Bastion Remnants suggests two eras of Nether civilization: an older one (the fortress builders) and a newer one (the Piglins). Whether these are the same civilization in different periods or two separate cultures is unknown.

Soul Sand Valleys: Mass Graves?

Soul Sand Valleys contain enormous amounts of soul sand and soul soil. The soul sand texture shows screaming faces. Fossils (bone block structures) are embedded in the terrain. Blue soul fire burns across the landscape. This biome looks like the aftermath of a catastrophe: a place where many beings died and their remains were absorbed into the ground.

The Ghasts that spawn here add to the atmosphere. Ghasts are massive, floating, crying creatures that fire explosive fireballs. Their tears are a crafting ingredient. They make sounds described as a cat that was disturbed while sleeping, recorded by the sound designer's actual cat. But in the context of the Soul Sand Valley, their crying takes on a different tone. They are mourning.

Ancient Debris and Netherite

Ancient Debris is found at the lowest levels of the Nether, buried in netherrack. It is blast-resistant and requires diamond tools to mine. When smelted, it produces Netherite Scrap, which combines with gold to create Netherite, the strongest material in the game. Ancient Debris is not a natural ore. It looks manufactured, with a metallic texture and industrial appearance. Someone made this material, and it ended up buried deep in the Nether.

Can you sleep in the Nether?

No. Attempting to use a bed in the Nether causes it to explode. This is a gameplay mechanic but also a lore detail: the Nether rejects the concept of rest.

Is there a Nether ceiling?
