Piglin Civilization and the Nether's Past

Before the 1.16 Nether Update, the Nether was a barren wasteland of netherrack, lava, and a handful of hostile mobs. After 1.16, it became something far more complex: a dimension with biomes, ecosystems, and a civilization. The Piglins changed everything we understood about the Nether.

Piglin Society

Piglins are not mindless creatures. They have a complex social structure. Regular Piglins hunt Hoglins for food, barter with gold, and live in groups in Crimson Forest biomes and Bastion Remnants. Piglin Brutes guard the Bastions with heavy weapons and will not be distracted by gold. Baby Piglins play with each other and steal items from players.

This is a functioning society. They have an economy (gold-based bartering), agriculture (Hoglin hunting), military (Brutes), and social behavior (children playing). The Piglins are not monsters occupying the Nether. They are natives living in it.

Bastion Remnants

Bastion Remnants are massive Blackstone structures found across the Nether. They come in four variants: Housing units, Treasure rooms, Hoglin Stables, and Bridges. Each type serves a different function, and together they paint a picture of a civilization with infrastructure, livestock management, and wealth storage.

The Treasure room variant contains a massive pile of gold blocks guarded by Piglin Brutes. Gold is sacred to Piglins. They equip gold armor, they barter for gold ingots, and they become hostile if you mine gold in their presence. Gold is not just currency to them. It is their culture.

The Zombification

When a Piglin enters the Overworld or the End, it transforms into a Zombified Piglin within 15 seconds. This is not just a gameplay mechanic. It is a lore statement. The Nether is the Piglins' native environment. Outside of it, they decay. They lose their intelligence, their social behavior, and their identity. They become shambling husks.

Zombified Piglins are already present in the Nether in large numbers. These may be Piglins who were exposed to something, perhaps the same catastrophe that reduced the Nether to its current ruined state. The fact that they wander in groups and only attack when provoked suggests they retain faint echoes of their former social behavior.

Hoglins: Livestock of the Nether

Hoglins are the only breedable hostile mob in the game. They can be bred with Crimson Fungi, and they drop raw porkchops when killed. Piglins hunt them actively. This establishes Hoglins as livestock, the Nether's equivalent of cows or pigs. The Crimson Forest biome, where both Piglins and Hoglins spawn, functions as a pasture.

Like Piglins, Hoglins zombify when they enter the Overworld, becoming Zoglins. The parallel decay of both species reinforces that the Nether sustains its own distinct forms of life that cannot survive elsewhere.

What Happened to Piglin Civilization?

Bastion Remnants are partially ruined. They are called "remnants" for a reason. The civilization that built them has declined. Piglins still live in and around them, but they are not building new Bastions. They are scavenging the old ones. The golden age of Piglin civilization is over.

What caused the decline? The Wither is one possibility. The soul sand valleys, filled with the remains of the dead, suggest a massive die-off at some point. The zombie Piglins that wander the wastes may be victims of whatever catastrophe struck. The Nether Update gave us enough to see that something terrible happened. It did not tell us what.
